of cabbages and kings
Jun. 29th, 2014 11:37 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
The biggest worry, for me, of course, was the extreme likihood of me flipping a feminine hygiene product out of my bag and into the lap of the King Slayer as I fumbled and flustered upon approach (I have form in this area, sad to say). Fortunately events conspired to make this scenario impossible. Ah, well.
So that was Sunday, all effed up, and I was so unwell, too. Should have stayed on the couch wrapped up in fluffy dressing gown, with a nice hot cup of tea and a Smash marathon on the telly. In my heart of hearts I knew it was the one true plan for Sunday. Everything else was stuff up city.
Still, it wasn't all bad. I did buy myself a replica leather flying helmet, just like I've always wanted. And I owned all of, what, ten seconds. Then Himself put it on, and it seems I'd bought Himself a replica leather flying helmet (and goggles), just like he's always wanted. Le sigh.
At least Friday was kinda cool. The usual departure lounge cake at work, then I took my time in lieu and bunked off early to the con (who does cons on a work day?) and queued up for ages, but I did see John Barrowman and Stan Lee, both very amusing.
I think the highlights were Stan Lee correcting everyone's grammar (in between being the coolest grandpa you never had) and John's shitty cat story (made perfect by Scott hovering nearby, thus I could turn to see his reaction to everything John said, much pained face palming, tee hee).
John was bouncing all over the place, and yes, Stan Lee's patter was well rehearesed and polished, but as I heard him answer the same question three times in the weekend, never once telling the person he'd already answered that, I can understand why he has his routine down. And yes, there aren't too many people around left to refute Stan's versions of events, but who cares. He was funny, the way old New York guys of a certain era were (we'll never see his like again) and he's body of work is massively impressive, so three cheers for Stan the man. He was sweet, joyful, excited and seemingly happy to tell the origin stories, and I did so love the bitchy asides at editorial or creative decisions by others he's still not happy about. Heh. (Holds a grudge, old Stan).
The queue for autographs was less fun, three very cold and crampy hours. Hey, I wonder if my unused tokens will ever be collector items? I doubt it, but I'm saving them in any case.
I also finally saw, and met, young Jamie Bamber (he of Hornblower fame) and he was really sweet when I told him I'd once seen him on stage in Liverpool, of all places.
Michael Rosenbaum, late of Smallville, and precious little else, was really fun, doing his own thing, wandering amongst the crowd, winding up the con organisers (I think I enjoyed that almost as much as young Rosenbaum did).
Went with Himself to a panel with Terry Molloy, who played Davros a couple of times, missed other panels I might have liked (but this is the deal when you're with others), and that's pretty much it.
Oh, George Lazenby and Richard Kiel were also there. George is a bitter, bitter man. Never, ever meet your heroes.
One stall was selling cake pops as Ned Stark on a stick (with lots of jam). Very silly, and very yum. We went back for more to have while watching the Game of Thrones finale, because we're like that.
The finale? It was ok. At some point we will stop smirking over the 'throne' bit. (Poor Charles, his most ignoble screen death yet).
Did not get to the RSC screening because they cancelled it, moved it to last Sunday, but I decided to go see the King Slayer instead, who then cancelled...so it goes. :(
Still with this bad flu I've had since April. Can not shake it. Not done anything I should have, and plenty of things I shouldn't (like standing around in the cold and rain waiting for the king slayer not to show up as advertised). Such is life. (I will get over it, but right now if it had been the King Slayer caught short I would have applauded).
Finished off Peaky Blinders at bloody last. Cillian is just magnificent and transfixing in this, and Sam Neill is such a bastard, even if it was weird to watch him in his ABC show at the same time. Why is it that the Brits seem to do the best westerns these days? (Peaky Blinders, Ripper Street and the Musketeers all had proper high noon showdowns).
I'm also rewatching Vikings S1, on dvd as opposed to shaky SBS reception, and I am shipping Æthelstan and Ragnar hardcore, I'm afraid to say. Bit of a viking theme this week, either that or a surprising amount of reading material beside my bed, which I am finally getting to, thank you flu, features references to Floki, Bjorn, Rollo, etc. Heh. I know, what are the odds, right?
Still working my way through Ovid, and the Musketeer sequels. I can definitely tell the Musketeer books were written prior to 1880. Much manly men slapping each other's thighs, etc. It's really weird to read anything from prior to 1880, from Homer to Dumas, with all the brotherly love out, loud and proud. There's almost a confronting amount of men hugging, kissing and crying, for this mid 20thC reader, at any rate (not to mention all the sighing, touching and secret looks).
That wicked, wicked law, which took Oscar Wilde and Alan Turing from us, amongst others. A hundred years of emotionally repressed men. No wonder we had two world wars. Crikey.
Anyways, yes, not sure if it's the taste of the Oxbridge dons doing the translating, but yeah, I seem to be reading/watching a lot of boys being boys of late (and being too sick to care).
Well, most of the time. Maybe I'm getting a little better? I might have detected a tiny flicker of a pulse during my last Vikings viewing (but otherwise, life is one big soggy pile of tissues of meh).
I heard they're sending the Viking boys to Paris next season (well it has to happen sometime if Rollo is going to beget Bastard Bill). I would dearly love to see Ragnar, Floki and Rollo doing Bonjour, Paris! from Funny Face, but I dare say, never gonna happen. What a pity. Maybe for the DVD, eh, boys?
Yes, I'm in that sort of mood.
PREVIOUSLY...
I always get that look. That look that says it's time for my pills again. This time I'd asked if he'd heard about the giant octopus that got stuck in Oxford Circus and held up traffic. Cue eyebrow raise. But it really happed. Harumph.
Also sad about the passing of Doc Neeson, legend, though it wasn't unexpected. The Herald cheekily asked would we ever see his like again, framing the question in such a way that one can't help but respond, well, you know. Sigh.
And Game of Thrones? Don't even get me started. Oh, Pedro, Pedro, Pedro, how do I love thee, let me count the ways. I can't help it, he was until Monday, my highlight of the week (and if you don't know why you've clearly never seen the High C or seen what I imprinted on as a wee duckling - grin).
I guess this means The Hound is my favourite character, simply by extreme attrition. (Update: now Sam)
Also, if you want to make your head explode, go and try shopping for ironing board covers. I'm not sure why dazzle camouflage is the norm, but I suppose one likes to be sure one isn't about to be torpedoed by German U boats while getting a nice edgde on the pleats.
So, how to catch up? As briefly as possible I guess. Pretty easy as this wretched flu has totally wiped me out for a month, so I pretty much just went to work and home to bed, do not go to the theatre or the pictchas, do not pass go, etc.
But there was last weekend, which pretty much killed me, but was fun. Supernatural con, NT Live and STC.
I only get to these Supernatural cons once every couple of years, and I know I'm way too old, but they are a breed apart. One of the last of the old school single show fan run con, these are just crazy, though I guess it helps if you have a roster of guest who are Completely Nuts. Himself came along just for the Q&As, and I don't think he was disappointed. We had the stories of the orange underwear, the plane fear and, alas, I was elsewhere for the klingon story, but apparently it impressed.
Misha posted this pic from the Melbourne con, just so you know I'm not kidding about the crazy.
Also did a turn around the campus, which features many a classic 50s building, and the columns from the only grand residence my hometown ever boasted (long since demolished, naturally, remaining bits now repurposed as a folly in the nicer suburb).
The next day there was yum cha (where Borders was is now a yum cha barn) and NT Live, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which I liked. Didn't love, but that's because it was hitting home so often. I used to fool myself into thinking I was further along the spectrum than that, high functioning, but really, really not. At least I know now why my parents couldn't bear me. And why no one ever talks to me at work except to yell at me. I suppose that's useful.
I did find an Edward Woodward LP in the old record store (and what a chore to carry that home in the rain and on the crowded bus). It only cost a dollar and was only bought to join my cabinet of curiosities. I am never to play it, so the law was laid down. Some people are no fun.
The next day I was off to Mojo. I was curious to compare and contrast with the UK production I saw last December, and man, this was so much better. Way better. Way, way better (and I was not expecting that). The Cavern influenced set, the live music, the quality of the performces, all superior.
How Lindsay Farris isn't off starring in some awful American series (because they seem to prefer Aussies in average shows, and save the best for Brits), I'll never know. Built like Superman, and with only one week to learn the part, he was amazing. Just mesmerising, with a tightly controlled danger that was terrifying enough to overcome the affectedness of someone playing the lead in his own drama. Which is basically what Baby is doing, playing the role, never feeling. Okay, it was a bit like watching Evil Hymie at times, but if anyone wants to remake Get Smart again...
Eamon Farren was a far more angry and active Skinny, and being more agressive made the constant showdowns with Baby scarier, rather than jut sad bullying. You could believe Baby saw this Skinny as a threat.
Josh McConville and Ben O'Toole made for a Potts and Sweets I could actually understand, for once, and I found their performnce more human, even though both characters were completely mad on their mum's diet pills, bless. Tony Martin was also a completely menancing Mickey. Well, who's going to be scarier, Tony Martin or the valet from Downton? Exactly.
So, top marks all round. After the performance was a Q&A. I asked if they'd watched any films, and Josh said Lock Stock. What, no Devil's Playground? No Summer Holiday? For shame. (Perhaps due to their cheapness I'm more au fait with British films of the 50s and 60s than your average bear). Jeremy Davidson treated us to his experience as a musician making his theatre debut, and the art of hanging upside down for an entire act.
So that was that. Aside from the flu I got stuck in the lift for an hour on the 50th floor (much like the Supernatural boy's story of inflight peril, my fear of lifts has gone from mild concern to actual fear, and all I got was a bottle of water, a $10 voucher and a telling off from the boss because I was in late, you know, on account of BEING STUCK IN THE EFFING LIFT).
So there was that. Did I tell you about the fire drill? Running down 50 floors? My bad knee stopped cracking for three whole months, it was so shocked by the experience.
While I was sick I watched: Atlantis (bit Merliny but casting Mark Addie as Hercules was genius), Peaky Blinders (well, a couple more episodes, I swear, they will pile on city wide shutdowns between me and my attempts to get time to watch more), Endeavour (which I really like, though I note Morse was a lot more PC in the 60s, snerk, as UKTV is playing Morse as well, so I flipped back and forth), Warehouse 13, Daktari (it's like watching a snuff film waiting to happen as yet another wild beast goes out of control and lunges at the cast), Musketeers, Case Histories and other stuff I can't remember or will admit to. I was sticking to mainly G rated fare because I was ill and wanted the tv equivalent of comfort food.
I've read the Odyssey, and have started on Twenty Years After and Metamorphoses.
That's about it, I think. Lots of coughing, piles of soggy tissues, long days and misery.
PREVIOUSLY...
So, enjoying the last episodes of Warehouse 13. I'm not sure how I'd go if I was a committed fan, but for a casual viewer come late to the party, I'm rather enjoying the whole we're so cancelled but we've rented the studio space so what the hell last days of Year 10 vibe they've got going.
The telenovela episode being a case in point. We laughed, we squealed, but I'm sure if you put the same silliness in another show I take a touch more seriously I'm sure I'd have not been so gracious, but, you know, whatever. It made me happy.
Case in point, I had a friend who went nuts when they added Claudia, but for me, since she was already part of the team when I started watching, so I wasn't so invested, you know? Besides, for better or worse, Claudia is often motor mouthing the exact, and I mean exact, same idiot things I'll shoot off, so it's rather hard to mind her. Her failings are mine.
That said, ask me how I feel about Teen Grimm. Oh yeah, I'm sure my friend would recognise that particuliar 'look what they've done to my show, Ma,' brand of fan angst, if she was still on LJ. Oh yes, indeedy. No replays on the PVR these days, not like the xmas episode which was on near constant rotation in the house, just because Nick beating up Santa never got old. Sigh, the good old days.

Matt Bomer & Jim Parsons Talk 'Normal Heart' at Variety Studio
http://www.justjared.com/2014/05/29/matt-bomer-jim-parsons-talk-normal-heart-at-variety-studio/
