After a particularly rough day, because I just love judgemental twats getting up in my face, it was a cheery evening with a barely bloody drinkable red and a big episode of Buffy (the one where Angel gets happy) and an episode of Law & Order UK, which wasn't cheery at all, but it had cute as a button Jamie Bamber in it, and they were wandering around my favourite streets (unlike other shows set in other cities, I could see them stroll past just one shop and know exactly where they are, hello shop, a couple of doors down from my Cafe Nero and I need to go back, I'm a few cups short of a freebie) and it's all old L&O episodes in English drag, which adds a further layer of meta hilarity to the proceedings, and there's Bill Paterson popping up to growl something in his brogue and, well, I am very easily amused.
Finished off with Once Upon a Time, which is freaky and does not bear close examination at all but I'm happy to waft along for the ride. It's all very daft but with the same sort of soapy stuff that kept me bouncing along with Buffy, so it tweaks that kink and I'm happy.
Then I found The Eagle on one of the movie channels. Why I do this to myself I never know. They start off with a scene meant to evoke every 'Nam film you've ever sat through and it just starts me off spluttering and swearing at the screen and it's all downhill from there. First off, I challenge their analogy. Vietnam, really? I read also they were trying to tie it up with Iraq as well. I don't think so. The Romans were in Britain for five hundred years, which hardly counts as a failed campaign, and if it does, well, what does that say about the mighty US military then, huh? Yeah, right.
Then it's on to raping and pillaging my most beloved childhood book. Honestly, there's more Sutcliff stuff in Centurion, bless you Fassy, so it's my preferred watch, but Eagle was on and so I sat through it again. Okay, I get why they excised the early parts of Marcus's brilliant career, but it does set Marcus up as the angry young man he is, burdened by reputation, and also that he has some form in going native and he's somewhat switched on (you never really get the whole quick thinking thing from Mr Tatum, alas).
I'm also dismayed that that dear Esca was made much surlier than he was in the book and, and it's a big and, that Marcus did not free him until the end of the flick. What that says about the film I don't know, but one of the joys of the book is that it's pretty much a buddy flick and the boys are on a much more equal footing, although Marcus is the dom in the Roman world, and it swaps once they go north of the wall. Which is cute. It really is meant to be a classic buddy bromance road movie, not surly boys freezing their arses off.
I really don't get why they kept Esca a slave. Okay, the Guardian review (below) finds it hard to believe ex-slave Esca would be so chummy, but did they really have to swing the pendulum so far the other way? Did they have to introduce all sorts of weird influences, when surely the classic Western (as in cowboys and injuns) tropes would have been enough? Yes, Esca has had a shitty life, but so has Marcus, and I thought the whole point was that they were best buds despite all that.
I mean, seriously, Esca is going to burden Marcus with all the sins of the Roman empire? Really? I've had family members bayonetted by the Japanese but that doesn't stop me eating sushi, you know? Or digging the Samurai.
And as for the whole thing about Esca staying by his master's side once freed like Cub, well, it's a bromance book. It's the whole if you love someone, set them free, if they love you, they'll come back thing. That made the book for me. Treacle, yes, but demeaning? What's wrong with Esca nuzzling up to Marcus like Cub? I want nuzzles. And snuggles.
'I have not served the Centurion because I was his slave,' he said, dropping unconsciously into the speech of his own people. 'I have served Marcus, and it was not slave service...'
They took away the whole odd couple friendship and boys own adventure stuff. Maybe it was a bit Fifties and naive, but I liked it. The way that Esca could overlook the history and love the man, I liked. Adored, actually. What is wrong with Esca giving his love and loyalty to one man, a man who has proven himself in his eyes, despite their natural emnity? Is that not the stuff of fictional legend? Have they not seen Enemy Mine? The Defiiant Ones?
(Aside: I've always wondered if Neal would come back if Peter ever set him free, but I guess White Collar are also unwilling to just go the romance of it all. Mind you, sometimes I think Peter would be far better off without Neal, who, unlike Esca, is a self-serving scoundrel at the best of times, but love is love and romance is always about doomed lovers, sacrifice and surrender).
They also skip the whole cunning disguise thing (nobody willing to take Channing dearest seriously as a locum?) and the fact that in no way would a cursed legion ever be reformed. One of the pleasures of the book is the somewhat downbeat ending. It makes it more real, and stays with you more, I found. Also, the entire effin' point of the book, is that no one wants the eagle once Marcus brings it back, so he buries it, so it ends up in the Reading museum. Did I mention it was the entire point of the book? Ah, but you go ahead, Hollywood. You know better.
As for the end in the fillum, when they grin idiotically at each other and wonder what to do next, I can't help but think it should be ladies night down at the local arena. Magic Marcus. Oh yeah, I can see it now. It's fic that demands to be written.
But not by me. Besides, the book has plenty of fun for the discerning reader. Ms Sutcliff wrote the slashiest books for young readers it will ever be your joy to read. By the time you get up to the Arthurian cycle, she's got openly gay characters in the mix. In a kids book. Written in the 60s. No wonder I found them nigh on impossible to find when I were lass.
I did approve the removal of the beard, though. Sorry, Cottia, but can you say waste of space? Everyone knows where the real story is. Heh.
Speaking of annoying waste of space females, there was I, caching a bit of Robin Hood while flicking channels and thanking my lucky stars that the annoying chick playing Marian has never darkened my screens again, such a whining wet blanket that I can't imagine why it took two whole seasons for Sir Guy to shish kebab her. So imagine my complete and utter horror (and yes, if I'd read the press I would have been forewarned, but I was trying to avoid spoilers) when she turned up in True Blood. There was me, spluttering and yelling 'Get out of my show!' at the telly again. To no effect, of course, for there she was. Mutter, mutter, mumble, gripe. I had far higher hopes of Chris Meloni, but no, she was still there by the end of the second episode. Harumph.
Don't you just hate it when so called actors show up in shows you like? It's like having somebody trashy crash a party. Sigh.
Oh boy. Was trying to find another copy of Eagle to read on the bus, because the bus is hard and my copy is a bit old and fragile (not to mention precious). Then I added up just how old. Older than Channing Tatum, that's how old. I think I'm gonna lie down with a cold compress now.
I now officially own books and records that were published before any of the boys in Magic Mike were born. Oh dearie me...
Really, really feeling like the guys in that Star Trek episode where they all get really old and staring in the mirror and wondering how the fuck did that happen?
And I should not have joked about Magic Marcus, because that really has conjured up some images in my head. It'll be no surprise at all for you to learn that, like Amy Pond, I've a thing for Roman soldiers, a big, big thing, so yeah, I should not have done that to myself. I feel a sexy Roman pic spam coming on.
I love a man in uniform.
Meanwhile, I remain bemused by the on going soap that is the life of young Matty Bomer. Now he's saying he never lied about being gay. It's neither here nor there, but that's a very Neal distinction. Saying nothing is not quite the same as telling the truth, but, again, his life is his own. What really cracked me up was the pissy comment about not coming out in an article that was only going to appear on the back page. I presume he's talking about the Details article here. So are you saying, dear Matty, that you would have outed yourself for a cover feature? Such a mercenary statement from the boy. Now, at last, we're seeing the real Matt behind the mask.
And there's the fun. I mean, personally, I thought he came out on the Today show last year, but it's the shedding of what was a carefully crafted, focus group tested, persona, after so many years of glassy eyed monotone on message rehearsed soundbites. Now the boy is being hissy, pissy, bitchy, mouthy, funny, snarky little thing, and have you seen what he's been wearing lately? In public, no less.
It's such a change from the usual way of things, you know, young actor dresses how he likes and says what he likes, then they tumble into the clutches of evil PR hacks and it's all slick outfits and even slicker soundbites and boring. Matty seems to be trending ahead into the whole speak like a child, dress like a clown thing that most actors don't hit until the leading man roles give way to character roles. Ah well, so long as he's happy.
Besides, nobody ever asks the questions that really matter, like is he a noisy eater? Blanket thief? Cold feet? Remote control hog? Most embarrassing track on the playlist? Talks during movies? Does he leave his phone on the table while dining out? Snore? Sing in the shower? Skips to the end of books first? Drones on endlessly about sports? Fills up the cache with obscure Russian viruses? These are the true measures of a man.
He is gorgeous though, even if he never makes me laugh in an interview or cry in the theatre. He's a good looking man. And I'm pretty sure that bright blue blazer comes from the GQ photoshoot (below). I'm also certain that Chris Isaak's mum would sew on some spangles for him if he asked her nicely. Smirk.
Did I mention we went to see the Bends again last Sat? In the city this time, with Benedict as Victor and Jonny as the monster. Crowd less amusing (the Tumblr girls with the vapours last time were value for money), seats comfier, commute punishing, brunch disappointing.
Jonny was a much sweeter monster, more childlike, and you can really see how much Jonny studied his kid to get that spot on as the monster is born and learns, step by step. I love the sly way he kept going after the snow. Benedict's Victor is, well, very Sherlock, but it can't be helped, they're both chaps who tend to live in their head, and he plays Victor as less arrogant, well, in parts, when he becomes confused and out of his depth when an emotional response is required. His Victor is a man in desperate need of a Watson, to tell him when he's being a bit not good. It's a good peek into what might have happened had Sherlock not met John Watson, and why everyone is so relieved when Watson appears on the scene, because an intellect unchecked, well, it's the story of Frankenstein, isn't it.
And man, can Benedict fill out a frock coat. In the name of all that is Benedict, can somebody cast him in a fillum that requires frock coats, tight trousers, flowing shirts and big shiny boots. Like, now? Tomorrow? It must be done.
If not, will the National Theatre ever release these on dvd? Someday? Soon?
It was good, damn good, though I preferred the camerawork better on the other version, as this was too close up, yes, I said too close up, for me missed the engine roaring in, which is one of the best theatrical images it's been my delight to see, the Industrial revolution in song and dance, oh yes, and we missed the birds, which I love more than Jonny's monster, I think, and he liked them quite a lot.
Nevermind, a fine showing, and we had our now traditional hot chocolates afterwards. Commute back was a bitch though.
Spent all Sunday in hard larbour, passed my test on Monday so I'm certified, yes, do laugh, and you'd think that bit of paper would help, but no. Oh well, at least I can tell myself I'm not a complete defective, yet. Passed my other test on Wednesday, where my girl bits were declared okay and it seems I'm just a hysteric afterall. Oh well, better in my head than dead. Misery this week is in the form of twats getting in my face all week. Yesterday they accused me of eating nothing but desert morning noon and night, which I can tell you is so completely false. No sweeties since my hot chocolate on Saturday, thank you very much. They probably think they're doing me a favour in their blunt arrogance, but they're just making me cry.

![]() Peter and Neal, a love story told in hats (Photo: Royal Easter Show, Sydney, April 2012, by me) |
They also skip the whole cunning disguise thing (nobody willing to take Channing dearest seriously as a locum?) and the fact that in no way would a cursed legion ever be reformed.

Can somebody please put Me Renner in a Roman uniform? Tomorrow? ta.
