suddenly last summer
Mar. 30th, 2014 01:57 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
That guy was smiling at me oddly (no one ever, ever smiles at me) and it caused me to think, with sudden alarm: he didn't see me the other night? He doesn't have photos?
Nah. Never gonna happen. Mercifully, I never run into anyone I know, anywhere, ever. Unlike Himself, where it doesn't matter if it's an exhibition, play, band, film, talk, whatever, he'll always run into someone he knows, and pretend like I'm not there. Le sigh.
Just goes to show, though, how I'm stuck riding life's bus with folks with whom I share absolutely no common interests at all. Which is kinda sad, a bit, and it's not like my interests aren't wide ranging. Which is another word for common. Don't care. It's why I love my philosophy prof, who is always willing to reference the Nietzschean themes in Groundhog Day.
What have I been up to? Well, at lot, and precious little of it what I should be actually, properly up to, but nothing like a crazy old cat lady telling you to get a life to inpire some hardcore fomo out every night shenanigans.
War Horse. Saw the NT Live screening, because it was the closest I'd ever get to seeing it in my home town, and I wanted to see it again. The story's a bit Lassie Come Home, but for all that, possibly because of my complete dearth of great uncles, cousins, etc, anything to do with WWI comes with several steamer trunks load of baggage. Certainly poor little Himself was snuffling away. Emotionally manipulative up the wazoo, which isn't bad for a bunch of puppets and a bit of lighting. Such magnificent puppets. I've always been interested in puppets (all those childhood puppet shows, from Andy Pandy to Joe 90), and these puppets are something very special indeed. You can see how it used to be considered a sacred/spooky art, bringing life to the lifeless.
There was Chinese takeaway afterwards, which has become a bit of a tradition now, since we have to walk past it on the way home. Cue ode in praise of prawn chips here.
Philosophy classes. Blah, blah, I drink therefore I am. I actually really enjoy these, enjoy the people. In the tea breaks they actually want to know what it was like to walk the halls of a gallery at 3am, and I want to hear about their travels in Europe.
Noises Off. This was the play I saw at the Opera House with the wonderful cast who not only threw themselves about the stage with gusto, wore the most hideous early 70s fashions with alpomb, but also let me take the first taxi that came, in the rain (see old links to storm, below). Sweethearts.
It's a play set, mostly, backstage at a small town tour of a stage production stacked with neurotic B list tv actors, and early 70s B list tv actors at that (the fake programme with fake bios is shiraz snortingly funny). It's taking the whole life is a stage thing, and making that stage some hideous English backwater on a never ending tour where nothing goes right and nobody knows what's going on. Naturally, it's a farce.
Aside from the pratfalls, which I always enjoy, being both lowbrow and raised on the stuff (britcoms like Are you Being Served and the Carry On films served as very obvious templates for the production), the attention to period detail was hilariously acute, from the fashions and hair (evoking actual guffaws and titters from the audience) but right down to the older actors speaking RP and the younger ones using their own regional accents, ala The Sweeney, as was authentic for the period. It was so seamless I actually had to have it pointed out to me in the Q&A that followed with the actors afterwards (always good value).
I loved it to bits, I really did, from the philosophical nihlism to Josh's pulnge down the stairs in platform shoes. Oh, yeah, went for Marcus, stayed for Josh. I'm fickle like that (how tragic for the boy, 1972 was his year).
Suburban Noir. The exhibition, and a talk by some of the artists and curator. I was there mainly to hear Peter Doyle, because he's fascinating, and I like all the themes he sees in the crime scene photos from suburban Sydney in the 50s and 60s. Sure enough David Lynch and Raymond Chandler were namechecked (but never Charles Addams, John Waters or Tim Burton, for some reason). He was right, for persons of a certain age who grew up in those fibro wildernesses, there is the sharp tang of familiarity and memory, as well as the ever present darkness, and that pair of legs sticking out from under the table.
As you might imagine, I was pretty keen. Composition, the dark side of the suburban dream, all the mod cons (the photos of piles of stolen goods taken as evidence were described as weird still lifes - grin), and me, sitting there darkly thinking I'd kill for those curtains with the to die for 50s print. Oh, wait, somebody already has, ooops (do ya think they could have got the blood stains out?).
Bless the old HHT (as was) for their quirky outre and macabre exhibitions. At the Q&A I asked Mr Doyle if he was flattered at the way the style of the old police photo archive has hit popular culture (see Boardwalk Empire, Ralph Lauren, Karl Largerfield, Michael Fassbender in GQ). Short answer: yes, but he have me a wonderful and involved answer. Basically, it is a truth universally acknowledged that Sydney has the world's coolest historical mugshots. Well, that criminal past has to be good for something.
Martha Davis and the Motels. Never been to the Basement before. It's rather quaint, and actually in a basement, but they really do serve you dinner with the show. Yep, I've finally entered into the twilight of the dinner theatre years. Still, fun, though the cheaper tables weren't tables as such, and, to be honest, even calling it a bannister or rail might be giving it ideas above its station, but that's what was set up, with stools lined up against it. Cracking view, as we perched there, but oh, my those stools were severe. John Calvin himself would have asked for a cushion.
Anyways, so I was lined up at the cheapskate singles table/bannister, and what a fun crew they were, our little rogues gallery, and I mean this sincerely. Sometimes I end up sitting next to folks who deserve to be murdered on page 17 of an Agatha Christie novel, but these were really fun people. Made the night very enjoyable and friendly.
The band, and Martha herself, were in cracking form. Heck, even the support act, Eleanor Dunlop, was way, way cool. Martha did all the faves, everyone had fun. There was even a conga line at one point. Lots of fun. Like I said in my tweet, lots of whoo and quite a bit of hoo was had. And I've still got all the lyrics to Suddenly Last summer stuck in my head. Who knew?
Grand night out.
And there was supposed to be some misery theatre but I passed on account of having a headache and being all cross, but I should have gone, I really should have gone. Just go home and have a quiet night, I told myself. So I ended up having the commute from hell that could be filmed as a Bruce Willis film.
Where do I start? The bus reeking eye wateringly like old pee, or what happened after he driver change over, a couple of hours in, when a passenger refused to get off the bus unless the driver took him to where he wanted to go, so we were essentially hijacked, winding through unfamiliar suburbia, and women started to get upset over a) being hijacked and b) missing connections and c) being late home, but these women were menaced and abused by nasty brutish men, so then more people became upset, more abuse, so it went and no one could call anyone because the big man with the shaved head and tattoos advised strongly against it.
Somehow, I got home alive, though I shook all night and awoke with a fever. Yep, shoulda gone to the Belvior. Even Sydney theatre, at its most earnest, can't be as bad as that, surely.
Oh yeah, they were also surveying the house next door, which means I'm in for it being a construction site for years. Joy.
Update: Ha! Just ran into someone from my philosophy classes in the lift. Okay, so I do meet people I know, but classmates in the office lift, never t'other way round, mercifully. I feel less of a friendless loser than I did an hour ago. This is progress.
It makes me happy because it's been a long, tough week, and two, two, mind, brawls on the bus in two nights. You know you're a bogan when...

Matt Bomer - White Collar Axed
http://www.contactmusic.com/story/white-collar-axed_4119190
